Unable to connect- multiple error messages for removing buddies

I am having several problems with my Pidgin account. I have the most recent update- downloaded last week- and I can't stay connected or see any of my coworkers as online. Everyone is constantly offline.

I have discovered that one way to make my coworkers "reappear" as online is to delete them and re-add them as buddies. However, this only works with one person before my system disconnects and when I reconnect, that first buddy (that was re-added and appeared as online) is once again showing as disconnected.

A  coworker advised me to modify my account to "use HTTP method" (to help me stay connected) and now when I try to remove a buddy, I get no less than 12 unknown (240) error pop up screens.

What is going on??
