I absolutely disagree. Every other IM client does this. Every other
application that has a notification area icon does this as well, with
the sole exception of Rhythmbox (which is the subject of a couple long
bug reports making these points).
The X button means "Close Window". With Pidgin, it does that. As Pidgin
is an IM client, it makes sense to keep it running even when the buddy
list is not shown. With a text editor, for example, that doesn't make
sense, so it quits.
