The only issue with runtime compositing of the version string is that it
is an awful lot of unnecessary processing. I think we really just need to
get the current logo in a layered image format (even svg would be helpful
enough I think) which would make this whole process a lot easier. I'd even
be ok with compositing the version number on during make dist to save some
Basically we just need to not have to fight this every release, however we
want to work that out.
