SOLVED! Pidgin ignores DISPLAY variable.

Agreed and fixed. Check out this "screenshot". ;)

        $ pidgin
        Exiting because another libpurple client is already running.

purple-remote and our DBus interface, while FAR from perfect, will
probably suffice for these needs.
